The principles of smart growth have been accepted by most academics and organizations advocating sustainable development. Citizens for Smart Growth has adopted the following ten principles as a guide for evaluating or promoting any particular development. These principles were created and approved by the Smart Growth Network, a division of the EPA.

1. Preserve Open Space, Farmland, Natural Beauty and Critical Environmental Areas

2. Create Walkable Neighborhoods

3. Encourage Community & Stakeholder Collaboration

4. Foster Distinctive, Attractive Communities with a Strong Sense of Place

5. Make Development Decisions Predictable, Fair and Cost Effective

6. Mix Land Uses

7. Create a Range of Housing Opportunities and Choices

8. Provide a Variety of Transportation Choices

9. Strengthen and Direct Development Towards Existing Communities

10. Take Advantage of Compact Building Design

These principles can be used as a reference for anyone who wants to participate in the process. We believe by getting more people involved the smart growth message will be heard and residents will learn the benefits of smart growth planning.
